Bad actors and bots that join the Discord to DM other server members

Threat Description

DM scammers attack by:

  • Impersonating the project/team members and announcing free mints or giveaways in order to get users to interact with a malicious link/contract

  • Impersonating popular projects and announcing free mints, giveaways, or to direct users to join a fake Discord with the goal of getting the user to interact with a malicious link/smart contract

  • Impersonating Join-Gate bots to direct people to fake verification sites in order to phish accounts

  • Advertising another project with the goal of driving traffic to another project

Prevention

Preventing Impersonators is covered in Staff Impersonation prevention section.

Once again, Security Education, DM Policies, and overall educating the users on wallet/Discord safety.

In addition to providing educational resources, be sure to highlight and bring attention to known scams with a dedicated 'Scam Alert' channel that is read-only and optional 'Scam-Report' for users to contribute.
